General guidance from health and nutrition bodies suggests that most adults benefit from somewhere in the range of eight to ten cups of water daily, though individual needs vary based on body size, activity level, climate, and diet.
A few evidence-informed habits can help:
- Keep a water bottle visible at your workstation as a passive reminder — research on behavior change consistently shows that environmental cues outperform willpower alone
- Start the day with a full glass of water before coffee or tea, since the body loses fluid overnight
- Increase intake before, during, and after any physical activity, not just intense exercise — even a long walk in warm weather warrants extra fluid
- Eat water-rich foods such as cucumbers, celery, watermelon, and leafy greens, which contribute meaningfully to overall fluid intake
- Monitor urine color as a rough guide: pale yellow generally indicates adequate hydration, while dark yellow or amber is a prompt to drink more
