There is no single mattress that is perfect for everyone. Choosing a mattress comes down to personal preference and comfort. Follow these tips to help you decide which mattress is right for you.
1. Test out several different mattresses. Lay on each one for at least 10 minutes to get a good idea of how your body feels on each one. Be sure to lay in the position you would normally sleep in.
2. Firm mattresses are not always the best choice. Some research has shown that medium firm mattresses are better for lower back pain than firm ones. Try to find a mattress that is on the firm side, but with a comfortable feel.
3. Be aware of gimmicks. Although some mattresses will be labeled as “orthopedic” they are not actually certified by a medical organization.
4. Try an adjustable bed. If you find that you are more comfortable in a recliner than flat in a bed you may want to try an adjustable bed in which you can elevate your head and your knees to relieve pressure on your lower back.
