Electrical stimulation is one of many modalities that a physical therapist or chiropractor may use during a comprehensive treatment session to help reduce pain and increase functional mobility. It is found to be a very comfortable and enjoyable part of treatment by most patients.
Electrical stimulation machines use electrical current to create a therapeutic effect on the body. Adhesive pads are applied to the painful area of the body and small electrical currents pass through causing thermal, physiological and chemical changes in the body. The goal of electrical stimulation is to alter pain impulses sent from the body to the brain and decrease inflammation. Electrical stimulation can be used in conjunction with heat or ice therapy to further decrease pain and inflammation.
Conditions that may benefit from electrical stimulation:
• Sprains/strains
• Tendonitis
• Acute Injuries
• Chronic pain
• Muscle spasms
• Post surgical conditions
