In our bodies we have fluid filled sacs called bursa. Bursa are present in many areas of the body and they act as a cushion for muscles and tendons. Bursitis occurs when the bursa become irritated or inflamed. This can occur for many reasons, but is usually do to repetitive movement or direct trauma.
Bursitis can often be treated successfully with physical therapy. Initially therapy will focus on decreasing pain and swelling. This is achieved with modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, ice and massage. Once the pain is controlled you will need to perform specific stretching and strengthening exercises to achieve the proper balance of strength and flexibility in the affected area. After the pain is abolished and strength and flexibility have been restored your therapist will assist you in the gradual return to your previous level of physical activity.
